Understanding Emotional Burnout: What It Is and How to Catch It Early

Life is full of so many ups and downs. During these times, many of us deal with emotional burnout without even realizing it. Well, what is it? Emotional burnout is when you experience the stress from life, especially in busy periods and begin to find yourself feeling more exhausted and drained. Majority of the time, this builds up and creates a big problem for everyday living- making easy tasks so much harder. It affects not only your emotional wellbeing, but your physical too.

How can we address it? In order to prevent this from happening again or happening in the first place, you must be able to find the major stressors in your life. Then, you are able to minimize them or eliminate them. In the cases where it is out of your control, put your focus on the present- where you may have neutral or positive events happening, allowing you to shift focus on the specific stressor. As for your physical health, it is important to incorporate daily physical activity- like walking, the gym, or sports and healthy living with eating balanced diets, at least 7 hours of sleep, and getting your daily dose of sunshine! Also, practice self compassion: do not guilt yourself for the feelings you have, everyone is different and it is okay to feel these emotions. At the end of the day, all emotions are valid!

If you are not able to see improvement after a while, it is important to seek professional help. The support from a therapist, counselor, or clinical social worker will provide you with more resources to help you manage your stress and give you new tools to help manage it effectively.
